Obituary

Woodrow was born October 10, 1918 to Cumy and Frank Sanders in Calico Rock, Arkansas. He departed from this life in Bakersfield, Ca. on June 27, 2009 at the age of 90 years. Woodrow and his two brothers were raised by their mother after his father died in a tragic auto vs. train accident in 1921. He attended school in Calico Rock and worked as a truck driver until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 at the age of 23. He served during WWII with the 80th Division, 305th Engineers Battalion and saw combat in France at the Battle of Nance which began on 9/12/1944 and lasted 10 long days. His Company was under heavy fire while trying to build pontoon bridges across the Moselle River for U.S. troops to cross in order to liberate the town of Loisy and take Mousson Hill from the Germans. He felt lucky to be alive since this was one of the bloodiest battles fought by the 80th Division in 1944. He was Honorably Discharged in 1945 and was very proud of his service to his Country. He returned to civilian life and married Ethel Belle Lofton in 1946. They moved to the Shafter area in 1952 where Woodrow worked as head cotton ginner at Garrison City and then for Frank Russell Manufacturing Company until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Kenneth and Doyle Sanders. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ethel in 1985; his daughter, Connie Howlett in 2000 and his second wife, Eunice Allen in 2006. He is survived by his son, Karel Sanders of Mississippi: daughters, Patsy (Kenneth) Kisor of Glennville and Frankie (Dave) Holzworth of Bakersfield; son-in-law, Ted Howlett of Georgia; grandsons: Brian (Sarah) Howlett of Georgia, Shawn (Tonya) and Jeff (Cyndie) Holzworth of Bakersfield; grand-daughter, Jill Howlett of Georgia; and six great-grandchildren. The Sanders family would like to thank The Hallmark of Bakersfield for the excellent care and assistance provided the past 3 years to our father and to Optimal Hospice for their compassion and care during the last three weeks of his life. Graveside services will be held on Wed., July 1, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. at Shafter Cemetery for Woodrow Franklin Sanders. Pastor Steve Seymour of Shafter Pentecostal Church of God will officiate followed by Kern County Associated Veteran's. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 30 from 2pm to 8pm at Peters Funeral Home, Shafter.
