Wayne Carlton Hill was born Christmas Eve 1929 in Gaffney, South Carolina to Lorene Maggie (Camp) and J Lawson Hill. The family moved to California in the mid-1930's and Wayne grew up in Shafter attending Shafter elementary schools and graduating from Shafter High School with the Class of 1948. In high school he was Student Body President and starred in track and football. He had the honor of crowning the Campus Queen, Inez Wright his future wife. They were married August 25, 1948. Wayne went on to attend college but returned home to take over his father's farming operation which he expanded and then sold in 1969. The family had to Porterville and Wayne worked in real estate and farm management. In 1987 Wayne returned to Shafter to care for his elderly mother. Wayne was an avid fisherman and enjoyed many summers in Crescent City for his favorite pastime. Wayne and Inez were members of the First Southern Baptist Church of Shafter. Wayne is survived by his wife of 63 years, Inez Hill of Shafter; sons, Gary Hill of Shafter and Terry Hill and wife Karen of Flagstaff, Arizona; brother, Kyle Hill and wife Diana of Clovis; 4 granddaughters and 4 great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents. A graveside service will be conducted by Peters Funeral Home on Monday, May 14 at 11am at Shafter Memorial Park for Wayne Carlton Hill, age 82, of Shafter who passed away May 7, 2011 in Bakersfield. Pastor Jim Williams of the First Southern Baptist Church will officiate and interment will follow.
