Obituary

Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother left this earthly home and stepped into her heavenly home on Wednesday, November 16, 2011. Wanda passed away peacefully at home with her three children—Nancy R. Webb, James Weldon Kirk Jr., and Samuel O. Hensley, as well as her daughter-in-law, Bobbie L. Hensley, and great-grandson, Wyatt Ethan Webb, which comprised four generations of Wanda's family at her bedside. Wanda was born and raised in Porum, Oklahoma, on July 11, 1926 to Samuel Ison Thompson and Nancy Ophelia Hurliman. She was a Christian and a Free Will Baptist pastor's wife, a Sunday School teacher, church song-leader. She wore many other hats as she tended to and worked in the church she loved. She worked as a supervisor at Bolthouse Farms for many years. She was the grandest lady with a kind and generous heart and was loved beyond measure. Wanda loved her garden, and many people often commented that her home, both inside and out, looked like it came out of Better Homes and Gardens. Her fried pies were without comparison. Wanda leaves behind a wonderful legacy of a Mom, filled with grace, and charm; who just lived to love her children and family. Nothing thrilled her more than sharing her love of Christ, which resulted in the conversion of not only her children, but so many others. She was a living example of her Savior. Wanda is preceded in death by James W. Kirk, the father of Nancy and Weldon, and Reverend Edward (Butch) Johns to whom she was married for 27 years. Wanda is survived by her sons, James W. Kirk Jr. and his wife Denise; Samuel O. Hensley and his wife Bobbie; and her daughter, Nancy R. Webb and her husband Mike. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Jason & Heidi Hensley; Marnie & Jerry Marfil; Heath & Brook Webb; Nicholas & Kristin Webb; and Gina & Larry Works. She also leaves behind nine great grandchildren, Jordan, Kirsten, Jacob, Jason (LJ), Jonah, Blyth, Lyric, Hadly, and Wyatt as well as a loving brother and a sister, Paul Thompson and Inez Roland. We would like to give a special thank you to Optimal Hospice's staff, Marian, Tasha, June, Sid, Armando, Bridgette, Lauren, and Stella for the loving care they provided for our mother. Additionally, we want to thank Kelley, Sister Maria, Heather, Martha, and Sister Sharon for their compassionate care during mom's illness. During the last few weeks of her life, God provided us with two special angels, Stephanie and Hilda. What a blessing you were to our Mom. Services will be held at the Bakersfield First Free Will Baptist Church, 2400 E California, Bakersfield at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 19th, 2011; and viewing will begin at 11:00 AM on Saturday. Pastor Bob Phillips will officiate and interment will follow at Hillcrest officiated by Pastor Patrick Palomo. Visitation will also be held on Friday, November 18 from 5pm until 8pm at Peters Funeral Home, Shafter.
