Vernon Leon McGuire was born September 29, 1937 in Porum, Oklahoma one of four sons born to Freida (Boehm) and Fred McGuire. The family moved to Wasco and Vernon attended Thomas Jefferson School and graduated from Wasco Union High School with the Class of 1956 where he participated in track and football. He went on to earn his Associates of Arts Degree from Porterville Jr. College. He served his country in the Army Reserve during the 1960's. Vernon worked for IMC for several years before owning the Hiway Barber Shop and later Bob's Barber Shop. Vernon started a new career in real estate becoming a broker/owner of McGuire Realty from 1977 to his retirement in 2006. Vernon and Muriel Skarphol married June 5, 1965 in Las Vegas and worked together at the office. They enjoyed using the mountain home and traveling, making many trips to Minnesota to visit Muriel's family. Vernon was active in the Wasco Elks Lodge #2419 where he served as Exalted Ruler and in many other capacities. Vernon is survived by his wife of nearly 48 years, Muriel of Wasco; brothers, Gerald of Bakersfield, Wendell of Wasco and Glen of Tollhouse; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 15, at 11am at Peters Funeral Home for Vernon Leon McGuire, age 75, of Wasco who passed away May 8, 2013 in Bakersfield. Pastor Alf Christiansen and the Elks Lodge will officiate the service and a reception will follow at the Elks Lodge. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Elks Lodge Charities or the charity of your choice.
