IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Velta June
Knight
September 17, 1937 – March 21, 2024
June was born in Oklahoma. During the dustbowl, at six months old, she moved to Shafter with her family. She was one of 6 siblings and they have all been incredibly close from the beginning and continue to be close, even today. She married Eddie, the love of her life, March 17, 1962 and they were married 58 years. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Palm Springs where she and Eddie attended First Southern Baptist Church. She and several friends made a trip every year to bible camp in Glorieta, New Mexico. She started a preschool in her church, and later moved the Preschool into an independent location. She worked there a total of 15 years first as a teacher and then as the director. At this time they moved back to Bakersfield. Once in Bakersfield she began teaching at Headstart for underprivileged children.
She was an incredible teacher and always put the children first. Many parents and co-teachers would say how inspiring she was. She could take the most active rambunctious child and by the end of the year they could sit still and had learned so much. At Headstart, she would visit the parents at their home, encourage her students in the classroom, loved them unconditionally and taught them the importance of education. She was so incredibly proud of the work she did.
She had 15 nieces and nephews and several greats. She attended every graduation, shower, wedding that she could for all of them. She made each one feel loved and cherished.
She was preceded in death by her parents her husband a brother and 2 nephews.
She attended church faithfully until she was just too weak to go. She passed away peacefully in the Mercy Southwest Hospital on Thursday March 21st surrounded by her siblings.
She will be missed by everyone who knew her. Until we join her, we will all carry her memories with us.
