Velma Pauline Smith was born September 4, 1914 in Hayworth, Illinois to George and Shirley (Durbin) Giese. Known as Peggy, she and Frances "Pete" Smith were married September 12, 1931 in Illinois and moved to Arvin in 1964. Peggy did some seasonal work in the local sheds in Arvin, but mostly served her family as a homemaker. Peggy was as an artist and enjoyed painting ceramics and china, including doing her own firing and casting. Peggy also loved candy making including peanut brittle and candy canes. She was famous for her candy canes and during Christmas time went to the area school and had candy cane making demonstrations. It was a family tradition that she passed down to her sons who still enjoy making them together. Peggy was a long-time member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Arvin. Peggy is survived by her sons, Frank Smith and wife Karen of Wahoo, Nebraska, Bryant Smith and wife Phyllis of Alta Loma and Steve Smith and wife Donna of Chino; 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 3 great great-grandchildren; nephew David Giese of Arvin and many other loving nieces, nephews and other family members and friends. Peggy's husband Frances "Pete" Smith passed away in 1975 and she was the last of her generation, being preceded in death by 7 siblings. Arvin Funeral Home will conduct a funeral service on Thursday, August 21, at 1pm in the Outdoor Chapel at South Kern Cemetery, Arvin for Velma Pauline "Peggy" Smith, age 93, of Arvin who passed away August 16, 2008 in Upland, California. Pastor Mark McGinty of the Calvary Baptist Church of Arvin will officiate and interment will follow. Visitations will be held Wednesday, August 20 from 4pm – 8pm and Thursday, August 21 from 9am – noon at Arvin Funeral Home.
