IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Van Don
Jewell
October 11, 1948 – May 9, 2020
Van Don Jewell was born October 11, 1948 in Rutherford, TN to Don and Margie Jewell. He married the love of his life Lillian "Lilly" Tyler Jewell in Atlanta, GA on November 7, 1969. Lilly preceded him in death at the age of 54 on February 14, 2003. They had three daughters, Rena Jewell of Bakersfield, CA, Rachel and Jim Hoeger of Bakersfield, CA and Amber and Josh Martin's of Littleton, CO. He also had one grandchild, Jacob Hoeger, age 19 of Bakersfield, CA. Van was baptized in the name of Jesus in Stone Mountain, GA by his pastor Rev. Don Abernathy and went on to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. He also served in the US Army during the Vietnam War era and since he was an excellent marksman, he was being prepped to be a tailgunner during the Vietnam War, but he was given an honorable discharge as a conscientious objector after hundreds of letters were written to the US Army by his church family in Stone Mountain, GA. In 1970, the army finally granted this request after the sudden and unexpected tragic death of his 16 year old brother Stevie Jewell. He is preceded in death by his parents Don at age 82 in 2002, and Margie at age 96 in 2015, his brother Stevie at age 16 in 1970, and his brother Ricky at age 57 in 2016. In addition to his daughters and grandson, he is survived by his sister Margie & (Philip) Murphy of Salem, OR and his sister Nema & (Jim) Wise of San Tan Valley, AZ. He is also survived by two nephews James & David Kincheloe, & two nieces Tracy Wollertsen & Tina Purdy, & a host of great nieces and great nephews. At the age of 71 Van passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday, May 9, 2020 while doing what he loved most—moving. 😊 He was an avid singer, songwriter, and professional musician. He learned to play guitar as a child and played in various bands along with his siblings throughout his youth. He loved to hunt in the woods of Tennessee and had many trophies mounted on the walls of his home. He was a man who loved to play and have fun. He was an animated storyteller and was the life of the party. He was very free-spirited, yet an extremely generous man and was a friend to anyone in need. His beautiful music singing and generosity will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
