Gracie B. (Johnson) Smith was born November 22, 1934 to Herman and Stella (Bradford) Johnson in Texas. Gracie and James R. Smith were married in 1950 and shortly after they moved to California, living in Arvin, Lost Hills and settling in Wasco. Gracie served her family as a homemaker and church was the center of her life. In her younger years she served as a Sunday school teacher and later helped clean the church building. Gracie is survived by her son, Ray Smith and wife Debra of Wasco; granddaughter, Lecretia Gibson and husband Randy; great granddaughter, Elizabeth; brothers, Garland Johnson and wife Marvela, Johnny Johnson and wife Carolyn, all of Bakersfield; sister, Helen Prince and husband Sonny of Tehachapi; and sister-in-law, Sally Johnson of Texas. Gracie was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Smith in 1998; son, Lonnie Smith in 1970; great-granddaughter, Emily Gibson in 2008; sisters, Katherine Howerton, Patsy Morgan and brother, Herman Johnson, Jr. Peters Funeral Home will conduct a graveside service on Thursday, April 2, at 9:30am at South Kern Cemetery, Arvin for Gracie B. Smith, age 74, of Wasco who passed away March 30, 2009 in Bakersfield. Pastor David Downing of the Sounds of Pentecost Church will officiate and interment will follow.
