Shirley Ann Thompson was born September 6, 1942 to William & Ophelia Haws in Bakersfield, California. She grew up in Wasco and attended Wasco elementary schools and graduated from Wasco High School with the Class of 1960. She went on to attend Bakersfield College taking accounting classes and began her 45-year career keeping books and doing taxes. She worked for Cappello Farms, Sullivan Farms and Wendy's and also did accounting for her many family and friends. Her friends knew her by her nickname "Big Red" and she loved to play Bingo. But the most important part of her life was her family. She was a hard worker and supported and raised her children and was a devoted grandmother. She attended New Life Center in Bakersfield. She is survived by her daughters, Shelley Bradley & husband Jeff of Paso Robles and Phyllis Pugh & husband David of Bakersfield; brother, Phillip Haws & wife Linda of Bakersfield; sisters, Louise Briggs of Grover Beach and Verlon Asbill & husband Gene of Fresno; 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She was especially fond of George & Debbie Cappello who she first worked for, came to be family and loved as a brother. The family would like to thank Hoffman Hospice and Dr. Patel and the staff at CBCC for their care and compassion . In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Awareness. A funeral service for Shirley, who passed away January 5th in Bakersfield at the age of 64, was held Tuesday, January 9, at 1pm at Peters Funeral Home, Wasco. Pastors Warren Wheat, Bud Messerschmidt and Cecil Parker officiated and interment followed at Wasco Memorial Park. Visitation was held Monday, January 8, from 2pm - 8pm and Tuesday January 9, from 9am - service time at Peters Funeral Home, 1401 7th St., Wasco.
