Obituary

Sallie lost her 5 year battle with Leukemia on October 27, 2011 peacefully at home surrounded by her family. She was born right here in Wasco. She was the youngest of the 3 children of Nathaniel Wallace and Frieda Little. When she was small her family moved to Fowler, CA during the time of war rationing. They had a walnut orchard and she and her sister Mary would play on the farm while their parents watched. After a couple of years they moved back to Wasco where she lived for another 72 years. She attended Wasco schools and graduated from Wasco High School in 1954. She still enjoyed many of her elementary and high school friends. Sallie spent her summers working in the family Sunland service station. She learned to pump gas and knew every model of car in Wasco. She could name them just by the sound. Sallie was an avid sports fan and loved her Los Angeles teams. She was involved in Wasco little league and the Lady Elks. Her hobbies included crocheting many beautiful items. Each of her children's families has doilies, afghans, coasters, table cloths, and Christmas ornaments she created. She learned to tole paint and made many seasonal decorations for their homes. She collected butterflies and people brought them to her from many different places. She was an avid game player and cross word puzzler. She loved to go the casinos. Sallie developed a blood syndrome in 2006. The disease required her to receive multiple units of blood over the years with Wendell right by her side. After she would get a transfusion she would be ready to go to Wal-Mart and shop. She was determined to live a normal life. Eventually the disease changed into cancer and she fought it valiantly. One of her granddaughters called her "sassy". She was definitely that and more. Sallie is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Wendell McGuire, four children Wenette and husband Robert Heywood, Freda Burke, Jerry and wife Marlene McGuire, and Tom McGuire, 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, sister, Mary Hatley and many other extended family members. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Francis Little, Brother-in-law Berry Hatley, son-in-law James Burke and great grandson Phineas Heywood. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many and will missed by all who knew her. Graveside services will be Friday, November 4th at 11:00am at the Wasco Memorial Park.
