Ruth Jane Chidester, 73, died Jan. 14, 2009, at St. Patrick's hospital in Missoula, Mont. She was born Oct. 5, 1925, in Philadelphia, Penn., the daughter of Ruth Wilson and adopted father Red Adams. She attended grade school in Philadelphia and joined the Navy at age 18. She was the assistant to the Assistant Director of the Navy in Washington, D.C. She met Art Chidester and after two dates, they decided to get married. The judge told them she could perform the wedding on Thanksgiving Day, but the couple said no because they had tickets to the Dallas football game, so they were married the day after on Nov. 24, 1967, in Arlington, Texas. The couple spent their honeymoon in Amarillo, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Chidester moved to Pensacola, Fla., while he obtained his education degree, then moved to Twentynine Palms, where Mrs. Chidester lived while Mr. Chidester served in Vietnam. Mrs. Chidester worked in editorials on the military base newspaper and as a medical records librarian in Twentynine Palms. After a car accident, the Chidesters purchased a fifth-wheel trailer and pickup and vacationed for seven years. They traveled north from California to Spokane, Wash., digging for clams and oysters along the way. In 1989, they traveled to Salmon, Idaho. They returned to make their home in Elk Bend and then in 1991, they sold their fifth-wheel trailer and bought a home in Salmon. Mrs. Chidester had a love of horses and one of her favorites was her Mountain Dove horse, which was a granddaughter to Sea Biscuit. Mrs. Chidester went to work for John McKinney, Attorney at Law, in 1991 and worked there until 2008. In her spare time, she and her husband enjoyed bowling. Together, they attended every bowling tournament they could. Mrs. Chidester was a member of the Wednesday night bowling league Gutter Gussies. Mrs. Chidester was preceded in death by her parents, sister Edith Ann Adams and brother Robert Adams. She is survived by husband Art Chidester of Salmon, Idaho. Memorial services were held at noon Feb. 2 at the Episcopal Parish Hall in Salmon with military honors by the American Legion Lloyd Shaw Post No. 67. Cremation has taken place.
