IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ruby Joyce
Self
August 27, 1930 – August 25, 2023
Ruby Joyce Self, age 92, passed away peacefully in her home on August 25, 2023. She was born August 27, 1930, in Cushing Texas to Elihue Arlington Mason and Cordelia Lane Mason. She moved to California 70 years ago to begin a life on her own with two daughters in tow. Over the years she gave birth to four more girls. Ruby worked as a waitress, manager, and Real Estate Agent for many years. She purchased her own home in Shafter, giving her girls a safe, secure, loving childhood where she resided for 62 years.
Ruby loved to sew. She made several of the outfits her children wore. She even helped to sew outfits for her daughter's baton group "Shafter Majorettes." She rarely kept her hands still and loved to be involved in her daughter's activities. She also shared her love of food by passing down her recipes to her daughters. No one could cook like momma could. She encouraged her children to pursue their dreams and she has always been their number one cheerleader.
Her life was a living example of the Bible verse, Ephesians 4:32 – "And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ." She was a kind, gentle soul that will be missed dearly.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Elihue and Cordelia, along with her sisters Mary and Maurene, and her brothers Henry and Dee. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law Doyle Andrews and grandson Jeffrey Andrews, husband, and son of Brenda Andrews. She is survived by her daughters, Brenda Andrews in Bakersfield, Cherrlyn Sue Jimmerson of Texas, Cynthia Betterton of Texas, Anita Self of Bakersfield, Kerry Self of Bakersfield, and Debra Self of Bakersfield. She is also survived by numerous loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved so very much. All of us left behind have been touched so deeply by her love and she will be greatly missed.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 1, 2023, at the Shafter Memorial Cemetery, located at 18662 Santa Fe Way, Shafter, California, 93263.
