Ruben Flores Valles was born August 13, 1929 in Avalon, Catalina Island, to Gregorio and Modesta (Flores) Valles. Ruben married the one and only true love of his life, Lupe (Melendez) Valles in Bakersfield, on February 21, 1951. The couple made Lamont their home and he began working in the agriculture industry; he first worked for DiGiorgio farming corp. for 15 years, then as an independent labor contractor and finally as a farming consultant in California, Hawaii and Mexico. Spending time with family was Ruben's greatest joy, and his family will always fondly remember his sense of humor and laughter filling the family home. He was a generous man, and one of the ways that he showed his love was through his financial support to those family members who were able to seek higher education. Ruben is survived by his sons, Ruben M. Valles of Fresno; Raymond M. Valles and wife Loretta of Bakersfield; daughters, Anna Medina and husband Cesar of Lamont and Adriene Valles of Granada Hills; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; siblings, Roy Valles and wife Nellie, Ramon Valles and wife Selena, Jesus Valles and wife Anita, Josefina Meza and Ausilio and husband Eulalio Barrientos; many loving nieces, nephews and other family members. He was preceded in death by loving wife of nearly 60 years, Lupe M. Valles in January; and his son, Edward M. Valles in 2010. A viewing will be held at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Lamont from 6-8pm, on Wednesday, September, 21, with recitation of the Holy Rosary beginning at 7pm. Mass of the Christian Burial will be said Thursday, September 22, at 10am. Father John Schmoll will officiate the service and interment will follow at Union Cemetery, King and Potomac, in Bakersfield.
