Roy Gafner was born May 17, 1927 in Wasco, California to Bertha (Staub) and John Gafner. He was a life-long resident of Wasco and attended Wasco elementary schools and graduated from Wasco Union High School with the Class of 1945. After graduation he served during World War II in the Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1946. He married Helen Barling November 28, 1958. Roy retired from PG & E after 37 years of service as a senior estimating engineer. Roy was a member of the Wasco Elks Lodge, American Legion and Eagles. He was Roy to most, to his family he was the most loving Husband, Father and Papa anyone could have. Roy loved to tinker and could fix anything. He spent many hours in his shop making things from decorative bird houses that were displayed all over the patio, detailed Swiss Chalet's, life-size wooden Deer and Wooden Barn birdhouse feeders. Details mattered to Roy and he paid attention to them at all times. This was always obvious in anything he did. He lived each day for his family and he often said it was his grandchildren and great grandchildren that made life so special. The Sunday brunch with family was something he looked forward to each week and his presence will be missed. Roy is survived by his wife of 53 years, Helen Gafner; son, Richard Paslay and wife Maxine; daughter, Karen Long; 4 grandchildren, Ryan Paslay and wife Lynn, Erin Henderson and husband Richard, Jeff Long and wife Laura and Jennifer Long-Perez and 10 great-grandchildren; and brother, Walter Eddie Gafner and wife Marge. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Frank and Bob; and son-in-law, Ken Long. Graveside services under the direction of Peters Funeral Home will be held Saturday, April 7, at 10am at Wasco Memorial Park for Albert Roy Gafner, age 84, of Wasco who passed away at home on March 28, 2012. Wasco Elks Lodge will officiate the service and interment will follow.
