Obituary

Roger Michael Uhl, 71, went to be with the Lord Sunday, January 22, 2017, at French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, CA. He leaves his wife of 43 years, Sally (Franz) Uhl; his daughter, Jessica Bigler Uhl and husband Matthew Bigler Uhl; his daughter, Julie (Uhl) Stutzman and husband Derek Stutzman; four grandchildren, Elijah (3), Allison (3), Rebekah (6 mos.) and baby Stutzman (due in March); his sister, Linda (Uhl) Coulter and husband Richard Coulter. He also leaves his mother-in-law, Rose Siemens, several in-laws, nieces and nephews. Roger was born and raised in River Edge, NJ, the son of Herbert and Adeline (Moquain) Uhl. Roger attended Riverdale High School and graduated from Penn State in 1968. Trained as a petroleum engineer, Roger moved to CA to begin his career in 1969. Roger met his wife, Sally, through a singles' group and married December 21,1973. Roger worked for various oil companies before beginning his own oil company, Bennett Petroleum, in the early 90s. Roger took such joy in being self-employed: being his own boss, working through all the stages of producing oil, mechanically tinkering with his oil wells. Roger embodied his identity as an engineer practicing precision, attention to detail, making a hobby of calculations and memorizing equations. Roger loved "playing" in his shop working on refurbishing anything old. Frugal to the core, Roger was a lover of a good deal. He loved meandering around swap meets looking for hidden jewels, and going to auctions in hopes of finding a bargain. Shameless, he often brought home jewels from his favorite dumpster to bless various family members. Roger had unmatched discipline when it came to daily exercise. Whether it be push-ups, his wheel or lifting weights, these exercises were completed before his morning coffee. When his daughters were in high school, he was tickled by challenging high school boys to match his strength and agility. A lifelong interest in wrestling, including being a wrestler in high school, Roger often attended NCAA National Championships and was an avid follower of the sport. Roger had a very kind, helpful and generous heart. He looked for opportunities to help others especially in ways that were unseen. It was a bonus to be a neighbor of Roger's, you could count on always having a built-in handyman. He showed a sincere interest in other people, curiously engaging them in conversation. Roger valued his connections with others and prioritized maintaining those friendships (even those from grade school!). In the last, several years, Roger took great joy in his grandchildren. He had no greater satisfaction than having his whole family assembled and watching as everyone came together in the morning.
