Obituary

Roger Frantz was 85 years old when he was welcomed home by his Savior. He had fought the good fight and finished with his family by his side on February 24, 2012. Roger was a man of faith, and the strength of his faith was in the object of his faith, Jesus Christ. He was born in Durham, Kansas, to Ferd and Anna Frantz on June 21, 1926. Roger was 6th in a family of 7 children. They lived in Cold Water, Texas during the Dust Bowl and moved to California when he was 8 years old. The Frantz family joined relatives already living in the Wasco area. In 1936 they were able to establish a homestead on Western Avenue near Wasco that continues to be part of the family farm today. Roger attended local schools and graduated from Wasco High School in 1944. As a boy he and his family attended the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church. At a city wide revival meeting young Roger accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and Lord. Soon after, he was baptized. He faithfully served and followed Jesus for the rest of his life. After graduating from high school he chose alternative service training as a smoke jumper in Missoula, Montana. He was stationed in Cave Junction, Oregon. After returning to Shafter he asked his high school sweetheart, Kathy Nikkel, to be his wife. Roger and Kathy were married on April 11, 1947 and made their first home on the farm. They welcomed Thomas, Melissa, and Samuel into their family. In 1960 they moved into their current home near Shafter. He served in his church and in his community on numerous boards and committees. He joined his father and his brother Dan, in the family farming business, FA Frantz & Sons. When FA retired, Dan and Roger continued on as D & R Farms, raising cotton, potatoes, and alfalfa. Later in life he welcomed son-in-law Barry Braun and son Sam Frantz into the family business. Roger is survived by his wife Kathy of 64 years, son Tom and wife Aletha, daughter Melissa and husband Barry Braun, and son Sam and wife Sue Frantz. There are 11 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. Memorial donations can be made to Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 28 at 11am at Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church followed by a reception
