Robert John Young Cryptographer, Assistant Manager, 78 Robert John Young, a lifelong resident of California who lived in Yucca Valley 19 years, died June 11, 2010, at Hi-Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree due to complications from esophageal cancer. He was 78 years old. The son of Jack Arthur Young and Marie Katherine (Glynn) Young, he was born June 25, 1931, in Los Angeles. Mr. Young served aboard the U.S.S. Mann as a cryptographer during the Korean War. He was an assistant manager for AT&T and Pacific Telesis for 29 years and had been retired for 25 years. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, gardening, woodworking, traveling, playing guitar and photography. He was preceded in death by wife Patricia L. Young in 1972, father Jack Arthur Young in 1972 and mother Marie Katherine Young in 1983. Mr. Young is survived by his wife of 37 years, Donna L. Young of Yucca Valley; daughters and sons-in-law Susan M. and Eric Schoeppner of Escondido, Diane M. and Ryan Broderick of California, Jeannie E. and Russell Eigle of San Clemente and Jennifer L. and Dan Saifer of Costa Mesa; son Jeremiah "Jerry" J. Scovel of Garden Grove; son and daughter-in-law Jeffrey E. and Dena Scovel of Westminster; sister Margaret M. Christensen of Henderson, Nev.; granddaughters Amelia "Amy" C. of California, Kathryn M. of California, Leslie M. of San Clemente and Corrie L. of California; grandsons Cameron S. of California, Jacob "Jake" R. of Utah, Sean R. of San Clemente and Steven O. of Escondido; great-grandchildren Travis, Kylie and Dillon of California; and many friends. A remembrance service will be held at noon June 30 at Citrus State Historic Park, by invitation only. Chaplain Martha Kauer from Hi-Desert Medical Center Hospice in Joshua Tree will officiate. Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery at 10:15 a.m. June 30. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to City of Hope in Duarte or to Hospice of Morongo Basin Inc. in Joshua Tree.
