Obituary

Robert Arthur Hannagan, a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend passed away in Roseville, California, at the age of 91. Born March 15, 1920, in Stockton, California, Bob was the only child of Arthur and Amy Ziegler Hannagan. He graduated from Kern County Union High School in 1937, where he excelled in track and field. He completed his AA at Bakersfield Junior College and began his career with the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1942, Uncle Sam called and he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. After flight training school, he became a B-24 pilot; he loved flying. Before leaving on his tour, Bob married Betty Richardson in Pueblo, Colorado, on December 30, 1943. After flying 44 grueling missions in the Pacific theater with men who became his brothers, he returned to his wife in Bakersfield and began a family. Bob continued his career with the Southern Pacific Railroad, retiring after 40 years as a construction engineer in the San Francisco office. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling the world with Betty, playing bridge, bicycling, golfing and corned beef and cabbage. Pacific Grove was always a special vacation spot that he and Betty enjoyed throughout the years. In retirement he was active with the 5th Bomb Group veterans where he attended reunions all over the country. His devoted wife, Betty, cherishes the memories they created together over their 67 years of marriage. Along with many life-long friends, he is survived by daughters, Suzanne and Carol, son-in-law, Phil, and grandchildren Ben and Amy. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Sacramento or to the charity of your choice. A 10 am Graveside Service will be held at Union Cemetery, Friday, June 24, 2011.
