Obituary

Riland W. Nixon was born March 18, 1928 in Melton, Oklahoma one of seven children born to Nora (Holbrook) and Jim Nixon. He came to California in 1942 settling in Shafter and on April 16, 1948 married Virginia Carr. Riland worked for Cooper Nursery before beginning his 36 year career with the Lerdo School District where he worked as grounds keeper, bus driver, custodian and maintenance supervisor. Riland enjoyed traveling to "God's Country" which was Oklahoma, Branson, Pismo Beach and the desert. He enjoyed camping and fishing of all kinds; listening to western music and watching western movies; and barbeque. Riland loved people and telling stories of the good ole days. Riland is survived by his wife of 64 years, Virginia Nixon of Shafter; sons, Jerry Nixon and wife Linda of Shafter, Steve Nixon and wife Chris of Bakersfield; daughters, Sherry White of Bakersfield and Lori Seymour and husband Steve of Shafter; brothers, Olen Nixon of Bakersfield, Jimmy Nixon and wife Joyce of Portland, Oregon and Bill Nixon and wife Kaye of Anaheim; sister, Joann Smith and husband Sid of Shafter; brother-in-law, Vernon Carr and wife Joyce; sister-in-law, Joyce Beck and husband Charlie; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Raymond and Harold. The family would like to thank Hoffman Hospice and nurses Cindi and Roselyn, for the loving care and concern shown to Riland and our family during our time of need. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Hoffman Hospice, 8501 Brimhall, Bakersfield, CA 93312. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 11 at 10am at Jesus Saves Church followed by interment at Shafter Memorial Park for Riland Nixon, age 84, of Shafter who passed away September 8, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family. A visitation will be held Monday, September 10 at Peters Funeral Home from 2pm until 8pm.
