Obituary

Richard Lee Holliman's tired, leukemia filled body said "enough" on Wednesday, June 12, 2013. Get my fishing boat ready God, Jesus and I are looking for bass. He leaves his beloved wife of 50 years Idanell Holliman, two sons Brian (Christine) and Kevin (Trina), three beautiful granddaughters, Brittany, Breonna, and Dakota, plus two sisters Ida Mae Whitecotton and Norma Vickrey, two sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law. He was beloved uncle and fishing buddy to numerous nephews and nieces. He leaves many special friends among his fellow Christians at Shafter's Church of Christ. Three beautiful neighbor children also called him Grandpa. Richard was born and raised in Shafter, graduating from Shafter High School in 1960. Twice he tried to leave to work elsewhere, but hometown Shafter kept calling him back. He died of leukemia peacefully at his home here in Shafter. As a young husband and father, he headed to Kern's oilfields where he started as a roustabout and worked his way up to communications tech with Belridge/Shell/Aera. Her retired after 28 years to fish and hunt, but grew restless with so much time on his hands. He obtained a part time custodian job at Richland Junior High School and quickly became a favorite to many of the teachers there. He also started a "handy-man" business with two of his best friends. Per his wishes, no funeral was held. "I don't want people standing around me crying" he often told his wife. A simple graveside service was held at Shafter Memorial Park on Saturday June 15, 2013.
