Refugio Varella Torres was born July 4, 1929 in Brownsville, Texas to Ricardo and Isidra (Villareal) Torres. Refugio worked from a very young age and entered into the Army. He worked in Germany cleaning mines in the late fifties. Refugio moved to Arizona where he worked for Mormon Church Farms for forty-two years until his retirement. Refugio married Mary Rita DeLuna December 2, 1978, in Florence, Arizona. Refugio was an outdoors man who loved hunting, fishing, camping and cooking for his family. He enjoyed western movies and Mexican sweet bread from Bakersfield. He also had some green plants he liked to care for. He attended Harmony Baptist Church. Refugio was a good man, generous and helpful to all, he will be dearly missed. Refugio is survived by his wife; Rita Torres, his son; Eligio and wife Maria G. Zamora, his brother; Sebastian Torres, eight grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; Jacinto Rodriguez, Mary Esparza, and Trina Crumb. He is preceded in death by his parents Ricardo and Isidra Torres and numerous brothers and sisters. A viewing was held for Refugio V. Torres, age 78, of Arvin who passed away November 1, in Bakersfield, Sunday, November 4, from 2-8pm at Arvin Funeral Home. There was a funeral service, Monday, November 5, at 10am at Arvin Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Eddie Garza will officiate the service and interment will follow at South Kern Cemetery District, Arvin.
