Obituary

Prima F. Martinez Nee Faz was born into eternal life on January 16, 2010, at the age of 89 after a sudden and brief illness. At death she was surrounded by all her children and numerous family members. She was born in Del Rio, Texas and moved to the Bakersfield area as a young child along with her father and siblings. She was married to Jess Martinez in 1940, and during WWII, she worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" at the Lockheed facilities in Bakersfield. She later had four children Norma, Jess Jr., Sandra and Cynthia. Prima was a licensed beautician and operated her own beauty salon for many years. In addition, she along with her husband, Jess, owned and operated Lola's Cafe on East 18th St. until the long term family business was sold. She was active in the Sociedad Juarez and Comite Mexicano De Beneficencia lodges. Prima spent her retirement years in Morro Bay, CA during the summer and the winter with her daughter and son-in-law Cynthia and Derek Dahlgren in Bakersfield, CA. She was always accompanied by her dog Sparky. Prima was preceded in death by her parents and siblings. Her beloved Jess passed in 1996. She is survived by her daughter Norma and husband Gonzalo Ramirez of Bakersfield CA, son Jess Jr. and wife Donna Martinez of Waukesha WI, daughter Sandra Martinez of Salinas, CA, daughter Cynthia and husband Derek Dahlgren of Bakersfield, CA and her brother-in-law Manuel and wife Jomarie Martinez of Lancaster, CA. In addition she will be missed by her grandchildren Suzanne Shelbourne, Christopher Ramirez, Roxanne Gagen and Nicholas Martinez and great grandchildren Jesse and Sunny Shelbourne, Cassidy Chambers, Christiana Ramirez and Forrester Martinez. Prima was proud that all her children were college graduates with one obtaining a law degree and another obtaining a doctorate in veterinary medicine. Father Ralph Belluomini will officiate Mass of the Resurrection, 10 a.m., Thursday, January 21, at St. Francis Catholic Church. Interment will immediately follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
