Obituary

Porter Black was born April 23, 1920 to Ora Elizabeth (Hastings) and William Alfred Black, one of six boys; all of whom have preceded him in death. His family moved to Arvin when he was a child and like many who grew up during the depression, began working at a young age in farming. Porter answered the call to serve in the US Army. He received many medals for his service, but was proudest of the 2 Purple Hearts given for injuries while serving in World War II. He was a life member of the VFW Post #97, 5350 South Union in Bakersfield and enjoyed the company of the other veterans. Porter worked for Eaton Produce Company and many other Farming operations in the Arvin/Lamont area. He also owned businesses in Arvin and Bakersfield for many years. Porter married Ruth Jenkins in 1980 and she passed away in 1997. After Ruth's passing, Rosalie Findley began caring for Porter; this grew into a companionship and eventually they were married May 21, 2009. Porter is survived by his 3 step-children, Sonny, Rudine and Myrna and many grandchildren from his marriage to Ruth; wife, Rosalie and her 2 sons, Danny & David Dixon; grandchildren, Desiree and Annie; and great-grandchildren, Jacob, Angela and Alyssa; sister-in-law, Donna and husband Alex Montgomery; nephew Chris and Brandy Sawyer and their children, Andrew niece, Lisa & husband Courtney Hicks and their children, Ryan, CJ, and Brea and many other friends and associates. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 26 at 11am at Arvin Funeral Home for Porter Black, age 89, who passed away peacefully at home April 20, 2010, three days before his 90th birthday. Visitation will be Sunday, April 25 from 2pm to 8pm at Arvin Funeral Home.
