Paulo Martinez was born June 23, 1920 in Hacieda El Pelar, Mexico and moved with his family to Texas when he was three years old. The family then moved to California when Paulo was a teenager, first living in Tulare County before settling in Kern County. Paulo married Ofelia Palomo of Shafter on July 6, 1942 and they raised their family in the Shafter area. Paulo worked for SA Camp and also for Minahoma Farms as a foreman. Paul was a self-employed truck driver hauling produce for 20 years. Paulo was an avid gardener using his green thumb to produce vegetables - tomatoes and chilies – and growing roses and trees. In his later years he began woodworking and made beautiful furniture. Paulo and Ofelia were members of the St. Philips's Church for the last 20 years. Paulo is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ofelia; son, Paul Martinez and wife Jane; daughters, Shirley M. Chavez and husband Arthur and Carmen Lucas and husband Stephen; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 5 great great-grandchildren; Reynaldo Martinez, Maggie Pacheco and many loving nieces and nephews of the Martinez Family; brothers-in-law, Joe, Rudy, Salvador and Alfred Palomo; sisters-in-law, Sarah Carrasco, Carmen Beadle, Irene Borjon and Phyllis Nunez; and many other loving family members. Holy Rosary will be recited Thursday, November 6, at 6pm at Peters Funeral Home, Shafter for Paulo H. Martinez, age 88, of Bakersfield who passed away November 4, in Bakersfield with his family at his side. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, November 7 at 10am at St. Therese's Catholic Church, Shafter. Fr. Craig of St. Philip's will officiate and interment will follow at Shafter Memorial Park.
