Pauline Ida Groves September 23, 1930 – January 9, 2008 Pauline Ida (McNew) Groves was born September 23, 1930 in Heber Springs, Arkansas to Spurgeon and Annie (Haile) McNew. The family moved to Shafter in 1943 and Pauline graduated from Shafter High School with the class of 1948. She was the Shafter Potato Queen her senior year of high School. After graduation she worked for Pacific Bell as a telephone operator and as a pollinator for Jackson & Perkins Rose Growers. Pauline began working as a typesetter for the Shafter Press and this is where she met Paul Groves of Groves Printing. They were married June 30, 1966. Pauline also worked at Beverly Manor for 10 years. Pauline enjoyed gardening and taking care of her flowers and yard. She loved her daughters and grandchildren and was proud of their accomplishments. Pauline attended the Valley Baptist Church of Shafter when she was young and later in Wasco the First Baptist Church. She was a devoted Christian and told her family she was ready to go be with Jesus. Surviving family members include her husband of 41 years, Paul Groves of Wasco; daughters, Patsy Stephens and Debbie Gervasi, both of Bakersfield; brothers, Aubrey McNew and James McNew and wife Allynn, all of Bakersfield; sister-in-law, Letha McNew of Shafter; grandchildren Ryan Walter, Maxwell Walter, Truman Stephens and Andrew Stephens; great-grandchildren, Evan, Haley and Madison. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Bill and Duane. A graveside funeral service will be conducted by Peters Funeral Home, Shafter on Saturday, January 12 at 11am at Shafter Memorial Park for Pauline Ida Groves, age 77, of Wasco who passed away January 9 in Bakersfield. Alf Christensen of the Trinity Lutheran Church will officiate and interment will follow. The family would like to thank Dr. Frank Chang and Evergreen Health Care Center for the exceptional care given to Pauline.
