Obituary

Mr. Owen Thomas Chappell passed away on June 18, 2025, in Bakersfield, California, at the age of 80. Born on May 13, 1945, in Chickasha, Oklahoma, Owen lived a life marked by service, dedication, and a deep appreciation for both people and the natural world.

Owen graduated from East Bakersfield High School in 1963. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country with honor during the Vietnam War. From 1963 to 1967, he was stationed overseas in Japan as an Airman Radio Operator. His time in the military left a lasting impression on him and shaped many of his values throughout life.

Following his military service, Owen pursued higher education at Bakersfield Junior College, where he earned an Associate of Arts degree in Accounting. This foundation led to a long and varied career in accounting across California. Among the many places he worked, two stood out as his favorites: Chevron—where he began his professional journey—and Yosemite National Park—where he concluded it. In addition to his corporate roles, Owen also spent about a decade running his own property management business.

Owen had a lifelong love for sports and the outdoors. He was an enthusiastic tennis and baseball player and rarely missed a football or basketball game on television. A devoted Raiders fan, he also enjoyed watching NASCAR races. His passion for nature led him to explore numerous National Parks over the years. His time working at Yosemite just before retirement was especially meaningful to him; it combined his professional skills with his love for the outdoors.

Faith played an important role in Owen's life. Though raised in a Southern Baptist Church and stepping away from regular attendance during his early adult years, he returned to church life when his daughters were young. He became active at First Assembly of God in Bakersfield—singing in the choir, volunteering at events, playing on the church softball team, and engaging deeply with scripture through daily Bible reading. He was known for having thoughtful conversations with those around him and sharing encouragement wherever he went.

Owen is lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Tracy Guest and Cari Holt; three grandsons—Philip, Toby, and Gideon Guest; and his brother Doyle Chappell. He was preceded in death by his parents Claude and Millie Chappell; two brothers Crandel Chappell and Darrell Chappell; and sister Franceal Rowell.

Owen Thomas Chappell leaves behind a legacy of quiet strength, enduring faith, and heartfelt connection with others. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him. A Funeral will be held on June 24, 2025, from 09:15 AM to 09:30 AM at Bakersfield National Cemetery 30338 East Bear Mountain Blvd in Arvin.
