Othel was born to Oscar and Ida Bell Root in Okemah, Oklahoma on January 22, 1930, and passed away in Bakersfield, Ca. on October 7, 2007 after a lengthy illness. Othel was one of five children and was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Vernon, Dane and Hoyt Root. She has one remaining sister, Josie Gibbens of Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1951, Othel married Jessie Donald Guinn (Don) of Maud, Oklahoma, and they moved to Taft, California in 1957. Don worked in the oil fields and they eventually settled in Lost Hills where they raised their two sons, John of Shafter and Ollie of Bakersfield. Othel was a full time wife and mother and spent countless hours being involved in their church and her son's activities. She was always there giving her love and guidance by doing such motherly duties as being a Cub Scout den mother or simply cheering her boys on during virtually every game they ever played or race they ever ran. Othel was small of physical stature and quiet, but full of love, compassion and giving. We will miss her very much. Othel is survived by her husband, Don of Bakersfield; son, John and his wife, Marsha of Shafter; son, Ollie of Bakersfield; three grandsons, Matthew, Adam and Zachary; two great grandchildren, Morgan and Kyle; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A graveside funeral service under the direction of Peters Funeral Home will be held at Shafter Memorial Park on Thursday, October 11, 2007, at 2pm, for Othel Gelene Guinn, age 77, of Bakersfield, who passed away October 7, 2007, in Bakersfield.
