Sheetz
May 24, 1921 – September 19, 2016
Ortelle Caroline Greenwald was born on May 24, 1921 to parents Joseph and Meta Greenwald of Saginaw, Michigan. She was raised with her two sisters, Elta and Aldine, and brother, Alvin. Carol graduated Magna Cum Laude from Saginaw High School in 1939 and graduated from Cleary Business College, Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1942 with an A.S. degree in Secretarial Training. In 1943, Carol moved to California and took secretarial jobs at Shell Oil Company, the Times-Mirror newspaper, and the Los Angeles Housing Authority, where she met Byon Sheetz at a company convention in 1947. In 1948, she married Byon and soon moved to Burbank to raise their three children; Darlene, Debra and Gary. Byon and Carol were members of First Lutheran Church of Burbank. In 1959, she was hired by the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank as Senior Secretary/Receptionist at Disney's front gate. She worked at Disney Studios for 27 years. When Carol retired in 1986, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, cooking, bridge club, church work and traveling. Byon passed away in 1996. In 1998, Carol married Volus Jones, a former legendary Disney animation artist. After Volus passed away in 2004, she met Sal Zavala and they became close friends for many years. In November 2011, she gave up her home in Burbank after 61years and moved to Brookdale retirement home in Bakersfield, California to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Lauretta Sheetz. Carol became very involved in the activities at Brookdale and served as Ambassador for new residents and President of the Red Hat Club. Her favorite activity was happy hour and dancing to her favorite "Big Band" music of her era. Carol was very devoted to serving the Lord Jesus and demonstrated her Christian faith by daily prayer and helping many people in her life. She is preceded in death by: her parents Joseph and Meta Greenwald; brother Alvin Greenwald; sister Elta Bluemlein; husband Byon Sheetz; and husband Volus Jones. Carol is survived by her sister Mrs. Aldine (Malcom) Cage, daughter Mrs. Darlene (Mitch) Cervinka; daughter Debra Sheetz; son Mr. Gary (Lauretta) Sheetz; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; step daughter Mrs. Susie (Bob) Zeich; several bonus nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. An informal reception will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 1:30 pm. at Brookdale Riverwalk, 350 Calloway Drive, Bakersfield, CA. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 11:30 am at First Lutheran Church of Burbank, 1001 S. Glenoaks Bl. (at Alameda Av.) Burbank, CA. In lieu of flowers, Carol has requested contributions can be made to: St. John's Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, in memory of Carol Sheetz, 4500 Buena Vista Road, Bakersfield, CA 93311
