A graveside service will be conducted by Peters Funeral Home for Nina Leon Parrish, age 85, on Wednesday, September 13, 2006, at 1pm, at Shafter Memorial Park. Pastor Dickie Holman of the Southgate Redemption Center of Bakersfield will officiate. Nina Leon was one of three daughters born to Genes and Elsie Whiteside. She was born on March 6, 1921 in Tuckerman, Arkansas; where twenty years later she met and married her husband, Bud Parrish. After having her first child in 1942, the couple moved to California and settled in Buttonwillow. Where she went on to have 13 more children; 8 girls and 6 boys. Nina held various jobs throughout her life, picking cotton by hand, to waiting tables at night. She could still put in a 40 hours a week well into her late 50's. Nina is also known for her outstanding cooking, considered by many to be one of Kern County's finest. Chili beans and sweet tea were just two of her many specialties. Nina Leon was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bud; daughters, Brenda and Paulette; 2 sons, G. W. and Fred. She is survived by 10 of her children, Helen Parrish Leikan of Bakersfield; Delores Williams of Bakersfield, Patricia Fontes of Bakersfield, Phyllis Schmidt of Weatherford, OK, Gary Parrish of Shandon, Ca., Donna Parrish of Garden City, KS, Roy Parrish of Bakersfield, Bruce Parrish of Fayetteville, AR, Velma Parrish of Bakersfield, Carl Parrish of Buttonwillow; sister, Emogene Nichols; 21 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
