Obituary

Natina G. Harkleroad Natina was born Jan. 4, 1917, in Jackson County, Oklahoma and went to be with our Lord on July 30, 2013. Natina was the only daughter, with 5 brothers, born to Charlie and Macie Boyd. The Boyds were simple farmers in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Their home was built on a strong Christian faith that she held tight to, all her 96 years. On January 12, 1935, she married her sweetheart, Easton Harkleroad, who preceded her in death on November 11, 1992. They were blessed with their only child, Judy Lee, on May 30, 1937. Two weeks later they moved to California with hope of a better life and leaving the Great Dust Bowl behind. Eventually, they settled in Arvin. For many years, both worked the fields; cotton, potatoes & grapes. She loved her Assembly of God Church, and even helped build the current church. As the men worked, she and the other women cooked. She loved working for her Lord. Some of her favorite memories were teaching children's church. In the 1960's, Natina went to work for Arvin High School. She retired in 1977 as their Cafeteria Manager. She had a simple philosophy: "Tithe 10%, save 10%, and live on the rest. If you can't pay cash, you can't afford it. Owe no man anything but to love him" In 2000, she moved to Bakersfield, and lived on the property of her grandson, Troy and his wife, Susan. Helping to raise and teach simple life lessons to their two sons. In 2011, she moved into assisted living at Hallmark of Bakersfield. She is preceded by brother Thurman (Atlanta, GA); and survived by 4 brothers, Ewell, (Eureka, CA), James (Bentonville, AR), Charles Ray & Billy Joe (Tulsa, OK); daughter, Judy Lee Canterberry (Bakersfield); grandsons, Richard & Troy and wife, Susan (Bakersfield) & Tony (Central Coast); great-grandsons, T.J. Canterberry (US Army, South Korea) and Josh Canterberry (Bakersfield); sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a thank you, to Hallmark of Bakersfield & Hoffman Hospice, for the wonderful care. A viewing will be held, Monday, August 5, 2013 at the Arvin Funeral Home, 600 Tucker St. from 4:00-8:00 PM. A graveside services will be on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at 10:00 AM at the Arvin Cemetery, Bear Mtn. Blvd and Vineland Road. The service will be officiated by Pastor Brian Overturf, Arvin Assembly of God.
