Obituary

Nancy Lynn (Hunt) Grainger of Shafter, California, passed away on September 8, 2026. Nancy was born on February 26, 1953, in Eureka, California to James and Lois Hunt. The oldest of five, Nancy grew up on her family's dairy in Fortuna, California. She graduated from Fortuna High School in 1971 and attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where she met Michael (Mike) Grainger. They were married in 1974. Following Mike’s two-year commitment to the Army they settled in Shafter, where they bought a 20-acre almond orchard along with Nancy’s beloved red house on Lerdo Hwy.

Nancy worked for the Richland School District for 21 years, first in the cafeteria, then as a clerk calling substitute teachers. She served as the Shafter 4-H community leader for 7 years. She especially enjoyed her 17 years as a sewing project leader. After being diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 1995, Nancy participated in the MS Walk for 25 years, supporting the MS Society and raising money for MS research. In 2001 Nancy was awarded the “MS Mother of the Year Award” for Southern California. Nancy served at the Congregational Bible Church as a deaconess and Sunday School teacher, as well as crafting for the church Bazaar for many years. She often expressed how much she enjoyed Thursday morning Bible study with the ladies at church who encouraged her faith in many ways. Nancy will always be remembered for her kind spirit, quiet faith and perseverance through many years of illness.

Nancy was preceded in death by her father James Hunt (2013) and brother-in-law David Grainger (2026). She is survived by Mike, her husband of 52 years, son Michael, daughters Alice and Amber, her mother Lois Hunt, siblings David (Carmel) Hunt, Juile (Ken) Houtby, Sharon (Gary) Hunt Anderson, and Kevin (Kamela) Hunt.
