Myrtle Jane was born in Dewitt, Missouri, to Daniel and Sarah Mann on October 16, 1911. She married Eugene Rhoads on March 10, 1929, in De Queen, Arkansas. The couple moved to Shafter in 1942. Then they moved to Escondido in 1952, and they both worked for Convair Air in San Diego until 1964. They eventually returned to Shafter in 1964. Myrtle was a very hardworking, independent and loving person. She took pride in her independence and caring for herself. She loved gardening, making beautiful quilts and crocheting bedspreads. Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Thomas; sons, James, Raymond and Marvin; sisters, Ellen, Mary and Belle; brothers, George, Lewis, Raymond and Johnny. She is survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; local Shafter relatives include, Helen and Jerry Schmidt, Ruby and Joe Haworth, Robert and Carol Smith, and Joe and Asonda Smith. A graveside funeral service under the direction of Peters Funeral Home was held at Shafter Memorial Park on Friday, August 31, 2007, at 10am, for Myrtle Jane Rhoads, age 95, of Shafter, who passed away Monday, August 27, 2007, in Shafter. Pastor Jim Glasco of Seventh Standard Pentecostal Church of God officiated the service and interment followed. A visitation was held at Peters Funeral Home on Thursday, August 30, 2007, from 3pm to 8pm.
