Obituary

Modesto Coria Bernal was born February 12, 1923 in Wasco, California one of 8 children born to Maria (Coria) and Eduardo Bernal. A life-long resident of Wasco he attended Wasco elementary schools and Wasco High School with the Class of 1941. Modesto played football in high school and intended to continue his education when he enlisted in the Army and served during World War II. He landed on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France in 1944 and earned a bronze service star. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned to Wasco. Modesto married his sweetheart Mary Jauregui August 30, 1949. Mary was the love of his life and they celebrated 57 years of marriage before she passed away November 18, 2006. He worked for Rancher's Cotton Oil for 35 years retiring as a chief engineer. Modesto was known as the "fix-it man extraordinaire"; if he couldn't fix it, it wasn't broken. He was always helping other with their fix-it projects and never had time to complete some of Mary's projects. He enjoyed going to Laughlin to play the slots and buying lottery tickets. Modesto loved dancing and mariachi music, he was the first one on the dance floor and the last one to sit down. He was a member of the St. John's Church, Guadalupanos Society and Knights of Columbus. Modesto is survived by his son, Carlos Bernal; daughters, Helen Simms, Vivian Ruddell, Martha Sanford, Mary Lou Inselman and Teresa Bernal; brother, Tony Bernal; sisters, Connie Montemayor and Nellie Serda; 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 10 great great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary; son, Benjamin; brothers, Eduardo, Jr. and Pasqual; and sisters, Cecilia Villarreal and Rosie Olvera. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Wednesday, June 6 at 6:30pm at St. John's Church for Modesto Coria Bernal, age 89, of Wasco who passed away June 3, 2012 at his home, surrounded by his family. Mass of the Christian Burial will be said Thursday, June 7 at 10am. Fr. John Fluetsch will officiate the service and interment will follow at Wasco Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 6 from 2pm to 6pm at Peters Funeral Home.
