Obituary

Mildred Allen, 78, of Bakersfield, CA went to be with the Lord on December 8, 2009. Mrs. Allen was born in February, 1931 to Floyd and Vesta Smith in Short, OK, the third of seven children. The family moved between Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri during the next several years. Mildred quit school in the middle of seventh grade to work and help support her family when her father became disabled. The family moved to California in 1947, settling around Wasco. The next year, Mildred was encouraged to go back to school, so at the age of 17 she enrolled in Wasco Union High School as a freshman and graduated with the class of 1952. That same year, Mildred met and married W.A. "Bill" Allen and they settled in the Wasco/Shafter area to raise their family. They remained residents until 2005, when they moved into a retirement facility in Bakersfield. Mildred was a long-time member of the Wasco Church of the Nazarene where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and served in various other capacities. In later years, she and Bill attended the Freewill Baptist Church in Shafter. She enjoyed reading, gardening, bird-watching and many kinds of crafts. She also enjoyed playing games, particularly Scrabble, Phase 10 and Rook. Mrs. Allen is survived by two sisters, Loretta Jones of Wasco, CA and Juna Doyle of Nexa, MO, daughter, Debbi Glaunert of San Diego, CA, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Allen and son, Mike Allen. Services will be conducted by Pastor Dean Long at Peters Funeral Home in Shafter on Sunday, December 27 at 2:00 p.m.
