Mary Marie Smith was born June 25, 1931 in Soper, Oklahoma to Robert and Clora (Nichols) Smith. Mary attended elementary school through 8th grade in Soper. The family moved to Arvin in 1943. Mary enjoyed reading the Bible and was very very religious. She attended the Vinelife Chapel in Arvin. Mary's neighbors who lived on Durham Street in Arvin will remember her many acts of kindness. Whenever she heard of anyone ill or in the hospital she would take her basket and collect money for flowers. When her health failed she moved to Taft Convalescent Hospital to be near her brother and his family, and then later moved to Bakersfield Healthcare. Mary is survived by her brother James Monroe Smith & wife Gail of Taft; nephews, James Monroe Smith, Jr. and wife Melissa and family of Bakersfield and Robert Harlen Smith and wife Brandy and family of Bakersfield; and her dear special friend, Peggy Eddy of Arvin. A graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 7, at 2pm at South Kern Cemetery, Arvin for Mary Marie Smith, age 76, formerly of Arvin who passed away May 4, in Bakersfield. Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 7 from 10am to 2pm on Wednesday, May 7 at Arvin Funeral Home.
