Marty was called Home to be with the Lord on June 8, 2011 at the age of 84. Marty was born on January 14, 1927 in Henderson, Nebraska to John Quiring and Tena Regier Quiring. The family moved to Los Angeles when she was 9 years old. She was baptized in the Mennonite Brethren Church in Los Angeles. She graduated from George Washington High School in Los Angeles in 1945 and attended Pacific Bible Institute in Fresno (later Fresno Pacific University) where she met her future husband, Melvin Nikkel. Marty graduated from PBI in 1948 with an AA degree in Bible. Marty and Melvin married on December 10, 1949 in Los Angeles. They moved to Bakersfield where they raised their family. Marty was active in the Rosedale Mennonite Brethren Church. She worked as a teacher's aide at the Blair Learning Center. After 21 years, Marty retired and devoted herself to her family, especially her grandchildren. Marty is survived by her husband Melvin of Bakersfield, and all her children: Jane Quiring (and husband Paul), Carl Nikkel (and wife Lisa), Donna Spoelstra (and husband Dean) and Nancy Nikkel (Wayne). She is survived by her nine grandchildren: Allison and Matthew Quiring; Ryan, Craig, Janna, and Kelly Nikkel; and Amy, Jeff, and Jon Spoelstra. She is preceded in death by her parents, as well as her siblings John Quiring, Jacob Quiring, Tena Fischer, Anna Neufeld, Nettie Nord, and Dietrich Quiring. Services are Saturday, June 18, 2011. Graveside service is 10 a.m. at Shafter Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at Rosedale Bible Church at 11 a.m. Lunch will follow.
