Obituary

Marian Ella McClain, 91, died Jan. 28, 2009, at Sky Harbor Care in Yucca Valley. She was born in Los Angeles in 1917 to Herman and Martha Stoffel. She and her husband, Donald McClain, who preceded her in death in 1971, lived and worked in Los Angeles until 1950, when they bought a home in Arcadia. Mrs. McClain was a meat wrapper for Ralph's Grocery Store in Arcadia. She and her husband moved to Landers in the late 1960s after their retirement from Ralph's. She moved to Yucca Valley in the 1980s to be closer to her church, Calvary Baptist. Mrs. McClain was a faithful member of Calvary, was the church organist, enjoyed playing the piano, worked in the church library, was a member of the Women's Missionary Society and worked with the AWANAs. She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Conley (Lewis) and Peggy McClain, both of Palm Desert; 13 grandchildren, Rick Rogers of San Diego, Kenny Rogers of Wisconsin, Craig Rogers of Yucca Valley, Robin Allen (Larry) of Arkansas, Darrell Rogers of Yucca Valley, Rebecca Conour (Perry) of Illinois, Tim Burns of Indio, Brandace White of Palm Springs, Jim White of Ontario, Marta Riviera of Azusa, Heidi Rolon of Glendora, Gretchen Knowles of Yucca Valley and Katrina Burr of Sacramento; 21 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by two sisters, Marguerite Gilmore of Las Vegas, Nev., and Frances Skidmore of San Bernardino. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Herman Stoffel, and a sister, Virginia Dalton (Charles), grandsons Jeremy Rials, Derek Allen and Thomas White; son-in-law Richard Knowles; and stepdaughter Anna Coleman. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Feb. 7 at Cypress Lawn in Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier. Pastor Rob Watkins of Calvary Baptist Church will officiate. Memorial services are pending and will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in Yucca Valley. In lieu of flowers, memorial Donations may be made to the King's Club Calvary Baptist AWANAs. Wiefels and Son in Yucca Valley is in charge of arrangements.
