Maria Lopez August 12, 1935 – November 22, 2012 Maria Lopez was born August 12, 1935 in Amatlan, Nayarit, Mexico one of seven children born to Anastacia (Rodriguez) and Jose Lopez. The family moved to Mexicali where Maria married Santiago Zarate and they raised their family. Maria moved to Shafter 9 years ago with her daughter. Maria loved to make flour tortillas for family and friends; visitors always left with fresh home-made tortillas. Maria was a devote Catholic attending St. Therese's Church and praying daily for those in need. She prayed for her family, friends and even those she didn't know. Maria was preceded in death by her husband, Santiago who passed away in 1994; son, Juan; parents and siblings, Felipe, Juanita and Isabel. Those left to mourn her passing are her sons, Cesar Zarate Lopez and Jose Luis Zarate Lopez; daughters, Carmen Zarate and Ana Castro; brothers, Miguel and Angel; and sister, Macaria; 12 grandchildren and many other loving family members. Holy Rosary will be recited Thursday, November 29, at 6pm at Peters Funeral Home for Maria Lopez, age 77 of Shafter who passed away November 22, 2012 in Bakersfield. Mass of the Christian Burial will be said Friday, November 30 at 10am at St. Therese's Church, Shafter followed by interment at Shafter Memorial Park. A visitation will be held Thursday, November 29 from 2pm to 8pm at Peters Funeral Home.
