Margaret Iona Miller was born on July 13, 1919 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. She went to be with the Lord on January 30, 2012 at the age of 92. Iona was the second of nine children born to Dave & Dora Sears. Iona's family traveled around, in their wagon with a team of horses, looking for work and spending their nights in a tent. She married Lester Miller on May 15, 1937 at a cream station (where they bought cream separated from milk) and gave birth to her only son, Jim, on February 15, 1938. Lester & Iona farmed in Stigler, OK for 10 years before moving to California in 1947 & settling in Shafter. Iona worked in the fields, picked cotton, worked in the potato sheds and spent many years enjoying her family as a homemaker. Her son, Jim, married Marylan on July 28, 1956 and they gave her two wonderful grandchildren, Tim and Melany. On her 75th birthday she was blessed with the birth of her first great-grandchild; three more followed in the next few years. On January 2, 1997 her husband Lester passed away just a few months shy of their 60th wedding anniversary. In the years that followed, with her son & daughter-in-law, she took numerous trips to Oklahoma and Arkansas for visits with her sisters and family reunions with extended family. She enjoyed stopping in Branson for a show or two along the way and could often be found camping at Pismo Beach. After many years of living alone Iona was blessed to have her dear friend, Mary Daniels, move in with her. These two became a support and a blessing to one another. Iona knew Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Shafter. She could often be found working in the church kitchen, especially during potlucks and Vacation Bible School. Iona was preceded in death by her parents, five of her siblings and her husband, Lester. She is survived by her son & daughter-in-law, Jim & Marylan; grandson, Tim Miller & Stephanie & children; granddaughter, Melany Millwee & husband Jeff & their four children, Moriah, Kyle, Matthew sisters, Mildred Davis & Wanda Lester of OK; sister, Dortha Webb of Bakersfield; brother-in-law, Charles David of OK; sister-in-law, Bessie Hutson of Wasco and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Friday, February 3 at 10am at Peters Funeral Home for Margaret Iona Miller, age 92, of Shafter who passed away January 30, 2011 in Bakersfield. Pastor Michael Lynch of the First Southern Baptist Church will officiate and interment will follow at Shafter Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Thursday, Feb 2 from 4pm to 8pm at Peters Funeral Home.
