Obituary

Funeral services for Margaret will be held at Peters Funeral Home Chapel in Shafter at 1pm on Thursday September 11, 2014 preceded by a family visitation from 10am to 1pm. Our beloved mother and grandmother went to be with the Lord, surrounded by her family on September 7th at the age of 88. Margaret was born on November 12, 1925 in England, Arkansas. She was born with a twin sister. Margaret weighted all 4lbs and her sister weighed 8lbs, there was no prenatal equipment at that time but Margaret was a fighter and a survivor. Her twin died at birth. Margaret had four brothers to contend with and from that I heard she could hold her own. She loved her brothers and they have all preceded her in death. She met and married Harmon "Pete" Clem, May 6th 1941. Pete was the brother of her best friend so that made it quite easy to be near him. Within months of marriage, Pete was called to duty and went to war, leaving his new bride to survive and again she did. She worked in a department store and cleaned houses while boarding with five other young wives whose husbands were in the war also. She kept in contact with those ladies up until their deaths. Pete came home and they moved from Arkansas to California in 1949 where they made their home in Shafter. In 1955, Pete and Margaret purchased a market on Rosedale highway-Clem's Market. There they worked together making a future for their five children. While Pete was dealing with the store, Margaret made sure her kids were fed, cleaned and loved. She also worked at the store. She would wax the floors in the store by morning and sewing in the afternoon. In 1969, Margaret ventured out and worked as a cafeteria cook at Rosedale Elementary where she retired in 1984. She was loved by all the kids at the school and many would come up to her after she retired and tell her how much they appreciated and loved her. She enjoyed her retirement by camping and fishing alongside Pete and the grandkids. She was quite a fisherman, but she loved the looks on the children's faces when they reeled in the "Big" fish. She would later cook them over the campfire. Great Memories! Her true passion were her children and her church. She loved us all and spoke and lived a true Christian life. Margaret is survived by her five children Harmon Jr. (Paula) Clem of Kentucky, Margie (Kenny) Holmes of Bakersfield, David (Stacy) Clem of Missouri, Debbie (Bruce) Beecher of Bakersfield, and Kenny Clem of Bakersfield; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. We would like to thank some very special people in Margaret's life and ours-Betty and Doyle Gallagher- For all your help and your friendship, Elsa; Mom's faithful friend, Pastors Andy and George of Grace Baptist Church for visiting and praying with mom and last but not least, the wonderful staff at Pacifica Senior Living, you were all our angels.
