Obituary

She's walking the streets of gold, and her mansion sits near God's throne! Mable Jewell McCourt went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 28, 2007. She remained faithful that God had a plan for her until the very end. She always told us that "God won't give you more than you can handle". Her family and friends admire the way she handled it all with so much grace. Mable was born in Casa, Arkansas, on January 23, 1932, to Mamie and Richmond Wise. She was the second of six children. As a child she spent time fishing at Nimrod Lake, going to church with the family and working in the fields. In 1950, she married her sweetheart, a local Arkansas boy, Roy McCourt. Mable and Roy moved to California in search of "the good life". They settled in Buttonwillow and raised their family. They recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. Mable chopped cotton in the fields around Buttonwillow, worked as a waitress at the old "Farmers Café", and later managed the "B.W. Drive-In". She cleaned the local bank, and she also cooked for the men at the "Lion's Den". She was known as "Grandma" to most of the children at the Buttonwillow School, she retired after 16 years as a cafeteria worker. Mable worked many hard jobs in her life, and you would never hear her complain. She was a faithful member of the Pentecostal Church of God in Buttonwillow for many years. We have countless memories of her singing in the choir, playing her tambourine, teaching Sunday School to the children, and camping on the beach with the church group. On Sunday mornings you could find her dressed in her very best, and wearing her favorite pearls. Her church potluck dishes of Texas sheet cake and good old fashion chicken and dumplings will be sorely missed. She later became a member of the Jesus Saves Pentecostal Church of God in Shafter. There her church family grew even bigger. She enjoyed singing in the "Praise Team", helping out with all of the children's activities, and going on the women's retreats. Mable was greeted in heaven by her mother and father; brother, Luther Wise; nephew, Larry Alexander, and many other friends and family who have passed on. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband, Roy; daughter, Ruby and son-in-law Jack Hickman; son, Anthony and daughter-in-law, Connie McCourt. She also leaves her sister, Vera and husband, Hershell Alexander; brother, William and wife, Lynnis Wise; brother, Richard Lee and wife, Bulah; brother, Marvin and wife, Mary Wise; brother, Carmen and wife, Pat Wise, all of Casa, Arkansas. Mable was a loving grandmother to 9 grandkids, and 19 great-grandkids. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She also leaves behind the friendship and compassion that her caregiver, Diane Castellon provided. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Optimal Hospice. A funeral service under the direction of Peters Funeral Home will be held at the Jesus Saves Pentecostal Church of God, 425 S. Shafter Ave., on Monday, June 4, 2007, at 11am, for Mable McCourt, age 75, of Buttonwillow, who passed away May 28, 2007, in Buttonwillow. Pastor Steve Seymour of the Jesus Saves Pentecostal Church of God and Pastor Johnny Maroney will officiate the service and interment will follow at Shafter Memorial Park. A visitation will be held at Peters Funeral Home on Sunday, June 3, 2007, from 2pm to 8pm. Please sign Mable's guest book at www.goldenvalleymemorialcare.com. Her family will forever cherish the memories and the lessons in faith that she taught us all. She loved her family so much; her spirit will be with us always. When God said, "enough" she suffered no more, and if we listen closely, we can hear her singing in heaven. "I'll fly away old glory, I'll fly away, when I die hallelujah by and by, I'll fly away!"
