Obituary

Lucille Bongberg passed away on Saturday afternoon in Shafter. Lucille had been a resident of Shafter for over 50 years. She was predeceased by parents, one brother, her only daughter, Janet Bongberg Stockton, and Robert (Doc) Bongberg her husband of 67 years. Lucille spent her final months and days surrounded by her two sons, Robert (Bob) Bongberg and Barry Bongberg along with other loved ones while residing at the Carrington Assisted Living Facility in Shafter. Lucille was born on February 7, 1919 in Laramie, Wyoming. Her father was a Railroader moving the family West eventually settling in Pomona, California. Lucille attended elementary, junior and high school in Pomona. It was during her junior high years that she met her future husband and one and only, lifetime love, Robert. In 1940 Lucille and Robert were married in New York City. During her life Lucille was active in all her children's lives and later her grandchildren and great-grandchildren lives. Lucille was an active member of the Shafter Women's Club and coordinated and/or participated in countless charitable efforts. She was a Den Mother while her daughter was in Girl Scouts and also a Den Mother while each of her sons were in Cub Scouts. One undertaking that she was especially proud of organizing was known as "Operation Homecoming". While both of her sons, Robert and Barry had served or were serving, in the Viet Nam War Lucille pulled other Shafter mothers together and began sending boxes of "homemade goodies" to their boys. She leaves behind an extensive web of family and friends. She is survived by her older sister, Ruth Hunter, her two sons Bobby and Barry, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, many nieces, and a huge extended family. Her friends are too many to list or begin naming. They all will be blessed with the fondest of memories from this dignified, humble and loving woman. The family would like to thank the Carrington Care Facility and the nurses of Optimal Hospice for the exemplary care they provided in the final months, weeks and days of Lucille's life. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1523 California Ave., Bakersfield, California. 93304. A memorial service under the direction of Peters Funeral Home will be held at the Congregational Church, 430 E. Tulare Ave. in Shafter, in celebration of Lucille's life on Saturday, August 1, 2009, at 11:00am. Pastor Mike Kotrla will officiate the service with lunch following in the Fellowship Hall.
