Obituary

Louie Clifford Epp was born to Rudolph Franklin Epp and Katherine B. (Scaroni) Epp on August 28, 1921 in Shafter, California. He along with his sister, Pearl grew up in this area, living in their home on Tulare Avenue in Shafter. Louie graduated from Maple Elementary School in 1935 and Wasco Union High School in 1939, and then attended Pacific Union College. In 1942 Louis and Bernice Jewel Smith culminated their "motorcycle courtship" with their marriage, and were later baptized into the Shafter Seventh-Day Adventist Church. To Louie and Bernice were born four children: Dorothy, Robert Sr., Donald and Rose. Louie served his country in the Navy as a seaman apprentice, during which time he was stationed in the Philippines. Following his tour of duty, Louie returned to the states and worked first as a welder, and then became an electrician, which was his primary career. Over time, Louie worked for several companies including Louis D Louis Electric, Schneider and Wycoff, Edwards Ari Force Base, Edmonson Pumping Station and the Mojave Air Force Base. This included work at the rocket test station. He earned the nickname "Boomer" due to his willingness to take on any job that was given to him. Louie's hobbies included bee-keeping, hunting, fishing, motorcycles and dogs, of which the English Shepherd and Airedale were his favorites. He also enjoyed attempting to graft trees. The family recalls time spent together huddled around the radio, listening to the old time classics. He son Donald also remembers a team project of building a bee hoist with his father. Another memorable event came in 1958 when the family bought their first TV, which Louie very much enjoyed. Toward the end of his life Louie developed congestive hear failure and Parkinson's disease. During the last 6 1/2 years he was faithfully cared for in Oxnard by his son Robert, a service for which his family is deeply grateful. Louie passed to his rest on April 4, 2011. He is survived by his sister, Pearl (Epp) McClain; children; Dorothy Louise Tess of Almond, Wisconsin, Robert Louie Epp, Sr. of Oxnard, Donald William Epp of Shafter and Rose Marie Hazel of Adams, Wisconsin. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. A graveside service under the direction of Peters Funeral Home was held Friday, April 8, at Shafter Memorial Park. Pastor Ted Baze of the Seventh Day Adventist Church officiated the service. Visitation was held Thursday, April 7 at Peters Funeral Home.
