Les Armstrong was born September 14, 1948 to Iva (Carson) and Charlie Armstrong in Portageville, Missouri, he was the youngest of 10 children. When Les was 9 years old the family moved to Shafter and he attended Shafter elementary schools and graduated from Shafter High School with the Class of 1966. Les went on to attend Bakersfield College before entering the US Army during the Vietnam War. He proudly served his country and was wounded in action, earning the Purple Heart. Upon returning home he worked for Beno's Department Store and later opened a gun shop in Shafter. He also worked for the Mosquito Abatement Program before beginning his 28 year career with the Shafter Post Office as a mail carrier and retired in 2006. Les married Pamela Louise Gaither June 14, 1975. Les was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, VFW, Elks Lodge and the Corvettes of Bakersfield Car Club. Les was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Iva Armstrong; 3 brothers, Leo Armstrong, Cecil Armstrong and Gene Armstrong; and 3 sisters, Janie Link, Clara Preston and Maudie Graves. Les is survived by his wife of 35 years, Pamela Armstrong of Shafter; brothers, Garland Armstrong and wife Jo, Clyde Armstrong and wife Joy; sister, Jewel and husband Gene Lytle; all of Bakersfield; brothers-in-law, Ron Gaither of Alabama and Don Gaither of Shafter; and many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 3, 2011 at 10am at Peters Funeral Home for Les Wendell Armstrong, age 62, of Shafter who passed away December 26, 2010 in Bakersfield. Pastor Jim Williams of the Southern Baptist will officiate the service and interment will follow at Shafter Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Sunday, January 2 from 2pm to 8pm at Peters Funeral Home.
