Leonel Moreno Gonzales Sr. went to be with his maker Sunday night, September 13, 2009. He was born in Weslaco Texas on December 15, 1954 to Esperanza (Moreno) and Alberto Gonzales. At the age of eleven he relocated to Shafter where he attended the local schools and graduated from Shafter High. He married Rosa Maria (Espinoza) on the 3rd day of November 1979. They had 3 wonderful children that he adored and enjoyed raising them in a heartfelt home. He and his brothers formed a band locally called "Sweet Walk Band, their music took a couple of turns and grew into gospel/Christian music along with their growth and walk with the Lord. Leonel was multitalented and played several instruments, but was most passionate about the keyboard. He held several positions in his life; the most memorable one was managing the Shafter Laundromat for 21 years. He got to know a lot of the locals and they knew him as a person with a big heart and good friend. His most recent position was with the Shafter Post Office as janitor. Leonel was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He enjoyed having his family together, loved spending time with this brothers. He would take anyone's pain especially of his children, if he could; they meant the world to him. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys Fan, to the point of boasting about his daughter Analea being born during a "Dallas Football Game". The family would like to thank everyone for their generous prayers, healing comfort and continued spiritual support. Leonel was preceded in death by both parents and was survived by his loving and caring wife of 30 years, Rosa Maria; son Leonel Gonzales Jr.; daughters, Sophia Lopez and husband Gabriel, Analea Navarro and husband Joel; brothers Alberto G. Jr., Eduardo, Arnulfo, Armando and Fabian Gonzales; sisters Esperanza Rodriguez and Anita Herrera; grandchildren, Alizabeth, Iliana, Raul and Gabriel Elisha Lopez; Litzy and Marilee Gonzales. Funeral Service will be held for Leonel Moreno Gonzales, Sr. on Friday, September 18th – 11 am at Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church with interment at Shafter Memorial Park immediately after. Visitation will be at Peters Funeral Home Chapel, Thursday, September 17th from 2-8 pm.
