He came to California in the Dust Bowl Days and lived in Lamont as a street boy. He did any work he could to have enough money to eat and survive. Leonard moved back to Lamont where he worked in the fields until 1962 when he moved to San Luis Obispo to work for the county doing building maintenance. Leonard retired in 1982 and returned to Kern County living first in Tehachapi before making Bakersfield his home for the last 15 years. Leonard married Dorothy May Gladwell June 18, 1940 and they celebrated 63 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on April 4, 2003. Leonard was also preceded in death by his parents and siblings; his death marks the passing of his generation.
