IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Leland Wallace
Bergman
May 27, 1916 – April 17, 2013
Leland Wallace Bergman was born on May 27th, 1916 to Henry and Mary Bergman in Marion, Kansas. He was raised on a farm in Hillsborough. With the farming and financial trouble the dustbowl brought, their family moved to Texas. Shortly after, around the age of 18, he traveled to California with twenty-one dollars in his pocket, along with his cousin to find work as a laborer, eventually saving enough money to move his family out with him. After years of hard work a gracious farmer who saw promise in his work ethics loaned him his first 40 to farm, which started the foundation of Lee Bergman Farms. He married his first love, Alvina Hildebrand in 1940 and together they had two children, Kathy and Joel. He enjoyed traveling to Israel, riding camels in Egypt, the Reagan Library and vacations in Hawaii, among many others. He spent years serving the church, as deacon as well as assistant to the Pastor, and was an avid singer in the choir. His deals were always done with a handshake and he was always generous with his money and his time. After Alvina's passing in 1981 he found love and companionship with Norma Plett. Throughout their marriage they enjoyed frequent travels to Kansas to visit family, socializing over coffee with friends and spending time with church and family. After the passing of Norma and his son Joel in 2012, he spent the last year of his life with the company of friends and family, reading the Bible and watching the Dodgers, and could always be caught sneaking candy to his great grandchildren and teaching them church hymns. He passed away on April 17, 2013 at the age of 96, with family by his side. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Alvina; siblings Oscar, Ethel, Robert, Gideon and Lowell; grandson Jason; second wife Norma; and son Joel. He is survived by his younger sister, Margie, daughter Kathy and son-in-law Lawrence, along with seven grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. He is also survived by Norma's children, Dee, Michael and Lynn and seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Memorial service is being held at the Shafter Mennonite Church on Monday, April 22 at 2pm.
