Obituary

Leeland Clay Phalen 90, a 31-year resident of Yucca Valley, died Feb. 22, 2009, at Sky Harbor Care Facility in Yucca Valley after a short illness. He was 90. Mr. Phalen was born Dec. 28, 1918, in Sheboygan, Wis., to Clay and Louise Van Dar Voort Phalen. He served in the U.S. Army from June 1, 1942, to Feb, 21, 1946, before he was discharged honorably. Retired, he worked in heating and refrigeration for Orange County for 31 years. Mr. Phalen and his wife, the former Janet Rasmussen, were members of the Joshua Jacks Camping Club. He also was a member of the Yucca Valley Organ Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his brothers, Bradford, Cavanaugh, Allen and Glen. He is survived by son Gary and wife Cindy of Woodstock, Ill.; daughters Carol and husband Ralph Flores of Conneaut, Ohio, Nancy and husband Jack Sadler of Chino Hills, Lynn Phalen of Yucca Valley, and Sharon and husband Kenneth Waring of Twentynine Palms; brother Edward Phalen of Butler, Pa.; sister Mary Ellen Trefry of Valencia, Pa.; nine grandchildren, three great-grand children and many nieces and nephews. Burial will be private at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside.
