Obituary

Larry "Dean" Scott was promoted to heaven on December 29, 2023 as he was surrounded by family who loved on him until his passing.

Dean was born in Arvin, CA on May 25, 1940 to Glin and Estelle Scott. He was the middle brother to Utah and Delbert. He graduated from Arvin High School and worked his entire adult life as a mail carrier in Arvin. More than 30 years after retiring from the postal service, Dean could still recite the addresses of friends and neighbors in Arvin. Dean was adopted by a stray German Shepard, Dummy Dog, and many still recall the two of them walking Dean's 13-mile route together for years.

Dean married Doris "Christine" Scott in 1961, and he was proud father to son Darren and daughter Shannon. When their children were young, Dean fostered Darren and Shannon's love of the outdoors and fishing. Dean and Darren enjoyed hunting together, and Dean never missed one of Shannon's sporting events. In 1984, Dean married Laura Breedlove and they enjoyed many travels and other adventures together until her passing in 2004.

The marriage created a blended family and Laura's sons Kevin and Steven became two of Dean's own. The new combined family spent two weeks each summer camping in Pismo Beach with friends. Dean could often be found on the golf course with Darren and Steven and so many of his golfing buddies.

Dean had a lasting impact on the lives of young Arvin residents as he coached many little league baseball teams. Later he enjoyed nothing more than analyzing the latest Dodger game with family.

His grandchildren were Dean's ultimate joy. He will be forever missed by Jacob and Zachary Scott, Sean Breedlove, Jacob and Megan Ornelas, and Winter Cochran Scott.

Dean loved Jesus and attended Arvin Calvary Baptist Church in Arvin. He never knew a stranger, and that was especially true of his neighbors in Arvin. He was generous and kind and was always willing to help his community. He was past president of both the Arvin Exchange Club and the Lamont Lions Club.

For years, Dean enjoyed meeting friends for a morning coffee. Then, after always believing he would start and end his life in Arvin, Dean became a resident of Brookdale in Bakersfield. He said he loved living among his new and some "old" friends there and he even became a Brookdale Ambassador, helping new residents acclimate to the community.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, his wife Laura and stepson Kevin, and most recently his son Darren. He is survived by daughter Shannon Scott and her spouse Ali Cochran Scott, daughter-in-law Cheryl Scott, stepson Steve Breedlove, all his grandchildren, and his special friend Sandy Shelton.
