Obituary

Katherine Shultz was born December 21, 1920 in Siberia, Russia one of five children born to Margaret (Peters) and Henry Unruh. The family fled Russia in 1928 to Harbin, China and in 1929 immigrated to the United States. During the relocation process, Katie ended up with 3 birth dates. She was actually born December 21, 1920, then when they immigrated her dad gave the wrong year so all her documents have her birth date as December 21, 1921. Then for some reason her driver's license has December 17, 1921. They settled in Dinuba and that is where Katie received her education. She was sent to Shafter to be housekeeper, nanny and maid and this is when she met Johnnie Shultz. They ran away to Las Vegas to marry on December 14, 1940. She was a homemaker while Johnnie farmed. They lived in Washington for 3 years before settling permanently in Shafter. Katie was a member of the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church and taught Sunday School for many years. She and Johnnie also served on the Fest Committee at church. Katie is survived by her daughters, Kathie Smith (Wayne) and Darlene Shea (Kevin); brother, Henry "Bud" Unruh; sisters, Olga Strid, Helen Stone and Ann Schwabenland; grandsons, Christopher and Jonathon Smith and Josiah and Nathaniel Shea; and 2 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie (February 1, 1978) and a daughter, Barbara Jean (1945). A graveside service will be held Monday, December 17 at 10am at Shafter Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at 11am at Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church for Katherine Shultz, age 90, of Shafter who passed December 12, 2012 in Shafter.
